Some persons do say that, the Economic hardships have made some people to resort to farming but finally face excessive loss due to absence of machinery, poor roads and many other challenges.
The assertion is evident as Tomato farmers at Adzorvi, a farming community in the Agortime Ziope District of the Volta region, are counting on loss as their produce rot on the farm due to poor road network.
The few fortunate ones, who are able to send it to the market, have to spend a lot of money on transportation.
The farmers numbering over 200, according to reports, cultivated various kinds of vegetables on about 300 acres of land but have their produce destroyed before their very eyes.
Speaking to Fafaa business news, one of the farmers, Mr. Wordi Felix noted that, his investments and hopes were all lost due to the disappointments these challenges posed to their yields. “I have invested about 500 Ghana cedis to grow the tomatoes and expected to make a lot of profits ranging from 4000 to 5000 Ghana cedis within the season to further my education”.
He also mentioned that, “even the chief’s farm produce too got rot on the farm which was so pathetic to say”.
“A lot of tomatoes were seen discarded on the farm and left to rot because they were unable to get to the market for sale. A motorbike could charge 15 Ghana cedis for a crate of tomatoes, okro, pepper and other vegetables produced from the farm due to the bad state of their roads linking to the central market situated at Ziope”. Mr. Wordi Lamented.
“Due to the risk involve in Agriculture and vegetable farming for instance, it is impossible for farmers to secure funding from the banks”. The farmer told Fafaa FM.
