The Headmaster of Afrangua D/A Basic School in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, Mr. Ekow Egyir Simpson, has appealed to Government and philanthropists to help the school to solve its infrastructural challenges.
The lack of a urinal at the school has compelled teachers and pupils to use a nearby bush as their urinal. The pupils use a dilapidated two-unit toilet facility.
The chalkboards in the classrooms of the 35-year old school have become very rough with tiny holes, making the teachers use more chalk than necessary and also create discomfort for the teachers when writing.
Mr. Simpson made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the sidelines of the School’s 35th Anniversary and Maiden Speech and Prize Giving Day held at the weekend on the theme: “Creating a conducive environment for quality teaching and learning.”
Mr Simpson enumerated other needs of the school to include a library, cupboards, teaching and learning materials, text books, chalk, access to potable water and financial support to supplement its insufficient capitation grant.
Despite the aforementioned challenges, he announced that the first batch of the school, made up of 10 candidates, presented at this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with 100 percent pass.
Mr. Simpson said the teachers were committed to their work, while the students were eager to learn but needed support and a conducive environment for the next batch of students to do better.
Students who displayed outstanding academic performance were presented with prizes, while parents who have shown keen interest in their wards’ education and had also supported the school in diverse ways were also recognised.
Mr. John Mensah, Gyabankrom Circuit Supervisor, commended authorities of the school for their hard work and urged both parents and teachers to play their various roles to maintain the standards of the school.
Established in 1980, the Afrangua D/A Basic School began with three classroom and two teachers, later stretched to class six.
In the 2012/2013 academic year and through the efforts of the chief, elders of the town and teachers, the Junior High School was added.
