Ban GM foods – Free the Mind Movement appeals to government

A nongovernmental organization, Free the Mind Movement, has waded into the campaign against the introduction of Genetically Modified (GM) foods into the country.
According to the Group, the negative effects of consuming GM foods far outweighs the benefits that the country stands to gain from allowing GM foods into the country.
Speaking at a public lecture, Executive Director of Free the Mind Movement Mr. Poku Dankwa, said our leaders are concealing the negative effects of consuming GM foods.
The Lecture was organized by the Esereso branch of the Seventh Day Pentecostal Assembly in conjunction with and Africa’s Green Revolution to educate the public on the negative effects of the much talked about GM foods at the Kumasi Culture Centre.
GM foods are produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering.
There is general scientific agreement that food from genetically modified crops is not inherently riskier to human health than conventional food. However, there are ongoing public concerns related to food safety, regulation, labelling, environmental impact, research methods, and the fact that some GM seeds are subject to intellectual property rights owned by corporations.

Already, the CPP and Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG), an NGO, are in court seeking an injunction to stop government institutions from releasing and commercialising genetically modified rice and cowpeas in Ghana.
Mr. Dankwa described GM seeds as “the Seed of destruction” and called on Parliament to take into consideration the negative effects of the GM seeds before passing the GM Bill into Law.

The Head Pastor of the Esereso branch of the Church, said the consumption of GM foods will shorten our life span if allowed to be introduced in Ghana.
