The National Chairperson for women in poultry production Mrs. Evelyn Agyenim Boateng has underscored the need for government to set up a supervisory authority with a sole mandate over the poultry industry.
Mrs.Evelyn impressed on its significance in the context of government’s priority agenda to revitalize the sector.
Currently, the government has set up a body to regulate the cashew industry. While at it, a Tree Development Authority bill is before parliament house and when passed, the cash crops would have its own Authority that would provide a clear vision and mission for the cash crops.
It is against the backdrop that Mrs. Evelyn wants the government to as well to consider the poultry sector in that direction with a regulatory body.
She, therefore, implored the government to critically look into this to avert any inertia approach that could dim its vision for the sector.
Government’s full commitment in this respect, she explained, would have the tendency of a stronger footing for the poultry sector.
The Chairperson outlined the vital role of the sector in the socio-economic development of the country and therefore needs a body to fully regulate its and formulate policies and programs to the advantage of the country
Mrs. Evelyn was commenting on the newly launched biometric data being rolled out by the Ghana National Poultry Farmers Association, aimed at capturing all poultry farmers in the country.
To her, it would be necessary, if the government takes a key interest in it, by enforcing that, before one starts poultry production, he or she is supposed to be approved by the regulatory body before starting operations in the country.
she referred to the Netherlands experience as regards the industry adding “the Netherlands is one of the leading giants in the poultry business in the globe, so replicating same in Ghana would be of greater benefit for us all
Per statistics, she recounted Ghana’s expenditure of over 400 million US dollars annually to import frozen chickens into the country to compete vigorously with the local players. In doing so, the burden on our local currency as against the major trading currency would be lessened.
Mrs. Boateng, said the presence of the regulatory body would help the government to gather the statistics required to develop a holistic plan for the industry.
