Cocoa farmers in the country have rejected the 11.7 percent increase in the producer price of cocoa.
Government, through the Producer Price Review Committee, today announced a 11.7 percent increment in the producer price of Cocoa.
Per the new price, a bag of Cocoa will sell for Gh¢ 475 (four million, seven hundred and fifty old cedis) instead of last year’s Gh¢ 425 (four million, two hundred and fifty old cedis).
The Deputy Minister for Finance, Ato Forson announced the new price at a ceremony to mark this year’s National Cocoa Day held at Tepa Senior High School.
However, right after the announcement, some of the farmers who attended the ceremony expressed misgivings about the new price.
To them the increment is woefully below expectation saying “we expected it to be at least five million old cedis”
They claim the increment cannot encourage the youth to go into cocoa farming.
One of them even threatened to cut down their cocoa trees and use the land to cultivate cassava
