Retrenched workers of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) have been asked to consider going into commercial citrus farming as it has lots to offer them.
Doris Appiah Kubi , Secretary of Mine Workers’ Wives Association (MWWA), who made the call, said citrus has a high market demand in the country and the rest of the world, and that citrus farming could be a rewarding career option for the retrenched mine workers.
She was speaking at the graduation ceremony of 44 women who were trained in assorted citrus beverage productions at Obuasi over the weekend.
They were trained in the production of mango juice, orange juice, fresh yoghurt, sobolo, ice cream and pineapple jam preparation as part of women empowerment to improve the local economy at Obuasi.
“Women empowerment is our core value and as a woman, when you have a specific skill or trade, it boosts your level of confidence and also brings happiness to the family,” she argued.
According to her, the Association intended to train more women in the areas of processing and packaging of sachet mineral water, palm oil and palm kernel oil, which move is geared towards economic improvement and increase in household income.
Christiana Graham, a beneficiary of the training, expressed her gratitude to the Association, asserting, “I can now have livelihood with the skill acquired.”
The trainees were presented with certificates of participation after undergoing a day’s training in business management.
