A Principal Research Officer of the Savanna Agriculture Institute, Dr Roger Kanton, says although the Northern part of the country has been experiencing late rains, the pattern has been good and farmers have produced enough food.
Speaking to Radio Ghana on the impact of this year’s rains on farming, Dr Kanton who is also a Deputy Director at the Ministry of Food Agriculture, said maize, yams, vegetables and other cereals are doing well except tomatoes.
Dr. Kanton however called for a Policy on Agriculture produce pricing to standardise prices for the farmers to make profit.
Meanwhile, President of Ghana Interpersonal Rice Production Association, John Kennedy Amoro says the impact of the rains on this year’s rice production will be amazing.
He said the only fear he has is post-harvest losses which the farmers must work on.
According to him other challenges are for buyers to be on hand to purchase the produce.
He said the bumper harvest may not affect the import levels because the local rice producers are unable to meet demand because of the increase in the consumption of rice.
Mr. Amoro asked Ghanaians to develop the taste for local rice which is more nutritious.
Mr. Amoro said Brand Ghana and the Rice Inter personal body is liaising with the Ghana Standards Authority to issue standard certificate for local rice to prevent people from packaging the rice in foreign bags.
