The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture Development, MOFAD, is to strictly apply the international plan of Action set out by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO to eliminate Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities on Ghana’s waters.
According to MOFAD, such activities mostly perpetrated by foreign fishing vessels cost the nation about ten million Euros annually.
Under the action plan, government will engage local players in the fisheries industry to develop policies to strictly regulate the sector and build the capacity of stakeholders.
The sector Minister, Sherry Ayittey, made this known at a stakeholders’ seminar in Accra to address Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated, IUU, fishing in the country.
