Government deserves more praises than the usual attack – chief farmer to minority mps

The Ashanti regional cocoa chief farmer, Nana S. Y. Akuoko has commended the government for maintaining the producer price of cocoa for 2018-2019 main crop season.

His commendation follows government’s decision to unchange the price of cocoa for this year despite the fall in world market price of cocoa.

COCOBOD announced the 2018/2019 cocoa season at GH¢7,600 per tonne, translating into GH¢475 per bag of 64 kilogramme (kg) gross weight.

According to bloomberg, cocoa is now trading between 2,031.00USD per metric tons in the world market price.

So this means the price of cocoa at the international market has diminished from US$3,300 per tonne to US$2,100, representing a decline of about 40 percent.

But the minority MP’s in parliament has accused the government for been insensitive towards the plight of the cocoa farmers in maintaining its current cocoa price.

In their recent press conference, the minority MPs wished the government could have done better by increasing the price of cocoa from ¢475 per bag of 64 kilogramme to GH¢ 682.61.

This notwithstanding, the Ashanti regional cocoa chief farmer has express sharp disapproval of the minority criticism against the government, saying the government deserves more praises than the usual attack.

Arguing that, the cocobod has assured them of better increment should there be an increment in the international market.

Nana S.Y.Akuoko is convinced, the COCOBOD would keep to their words and increase the producer price to commensurate with the world market.
