Government to partner poultry farmers to set-up broiler production factories

The National President of Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Mr. Victor Oppong Adjei has disclosed to gardjagh.org that government intends to partner the Association to set up broiler production factory to produce fresh chicken for local consumption.

Poultry farmers, over the years, have initiated the move to produce fresh chicken for local markets. However, the industry has been unsuccessful due to stiff competition from importers of frozen chicken. But the lack of commitment from successive governments and local investors have made it difficult to turn the situation around.

But, speaking exclusively to gardjagh.org, Mr. Oppong hinted that, the government has shown some level of commitment in setting up production factory through its flagship program “one district, one factory.” that will offer them the zing to produce more broiler for local consumption.

He noted that this will offer them the keenness to produce more broiler for local consumption.

He revealed that about “95% of our populations depend on frozen chicken,” the situation he describes as very worrying.

He observed that Ghanaians consume a lot of poultry product, especially during festivals like Christmas and Easter, “but the local poultry is negatively affected due to increased importation of frozen chicken to into the country.”

It is therefore hoped that the arrangement between the Association and government to establish a broiler production factory, within a very short time, will help to reduce poultry importation into the country.
