‘Government is poised to improve food nutrition and food insecurity in the country through modernized agricultural practices and modern irrigation systems,’ according to Mr. Seth Terkper, the Finance Minister.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr. Seth Terkper, who disclosed this on the floor of parliament during the 2016 budget presentation also said that in order to increase food production, management of national strategic bi-emergency, commercialization as well as the establishment of early warning detective system were put in place to assist farmers.
He said about 200,000 metric tons of improved dry seeds were distributed to 10,000 farmers in the three northern region of Ghana, includeing the Upper East, Upper West and the Northern regions.
He said the initiative relieved farmers from extra cost incurred in acquiring the seeds.
“The government is also collaborating with Spanish firm to established irrigation technology through agriculture colleges; due to this 7500 hectors of land have been acquired to develop crops,” he said.
Among other interventions, he said government will establish green house capacity building and training centers to train farmers; youth, women and agric graduates, in commercial,
modern green house vegetable production.
