Mr. Apori Yeboah, the Municipal Agriculture Officer in charge of Crops, has expressed worry at the late arrival of farm inputs to be distributed to beneficiary farmers on the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme in the Municipality.
He said the district registered over 400 farmers in 2018 of which 93 bags of maize seeds were to be distributed to but due to the delay, only 17.5 bags were given out and the rest of the crop seeds preserved to be distribute this year.
This, he said was because most farmers Planted earlier than the scheduled period before the arrival of the farm inputs.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkawkaw, Mr Yeboah said the other crops such as cabbage, cucumber, lettuce and rice seeds also saw low patronage by the beneficiary farmers.
He said the department had no plans of requesting for more of the farm inputs because stored crop seeds and fertilizers, would be distributed to the registered agro chemical dealers in the municipality for registered farmers to have access to them.
Mr. Yeboah also spoke about bad road network, inadequate staff, lacked of incentives for workers and telecommunications problems to have been some of the challenges that affected the success of the programme and therefore called on government to come to their aid in order to increase productivity.
