Onion sellers at the Agbogbloshie market are calling on the government to come to their aid as police men designated at various barriers are collecting huge sums of monies from them before they are allowed to cross every barrier to the city.
Speaking to Kasapa FM’s Leticia Ohene-Asiedu, one of the traders Baba Musah said before the onions are brought to the market they must have at least GHC 500 cedis on them to pay as bribe to different police men.
“The harassment from the police is too much. From Bawku to Accra you must make your GHC 500 ready to pay bribes to the police. After we pay duty of GHC 800 on one car, the police will not stop worrying us. They make all sorts of demands, knowing that since our goods are perishable we’ll be forced to pay the bribes, so we don’t delay on the road. Government must immediately intervene to give us some relief.”
He said currently onions sold at the market are brought from Niger since the season for the cultivation of onions in Ghana is past.
Baba Musah said onions are usually grown in June and July and added that a sack of onion now goes for 700 cedis.
