The 2014 national best farmer, Mr. George Amankwa, has called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), to review its prizing package in honoring dedicated and hardworking farmers in the country.
He said the current award prizes and packages to farmers in the country is not encouraging and does not add any yield to food production in the country.
The 2014 best farmer said this to GARDJA also noted that the time has come for the next best farmers to be equipped with modern mechanize farming tools that can assist them to maximize their crop yield to feed the country, particularly at a time the country faces food insecurity.
The era where wellington boots, joy daddy bitters, bars of key soap and others are given as packages to dedicated farmers should be considered out-dated, and for which reason proper packages should be put in place to replace that.
He has therefore proposed that the 2015 farmers’ day award prizes should focus on mechanization of farms for the best farmers countrywide.
He also stated that the cars and the houses may be good, but there the need for massive improvement in the current system of awarding farmers.
Mr. Amankwa said if all the awardees farms are mechanized, Ghana would become food secured and live away from depending on neighboring countries for food.
