Vegetables farmers at Weija in the Ga South Municipality have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, to intercede on their behalf on the current sky-rocketing electricity charges.

According to them, the high electricity tariff is threatening their business. The group is also known as the Weija Irrigation Water Users Association.
The group led by its chairman, Shuaibu Abdul-Mumin Agboh paid a courtesy call on the Speaker Thursday to inform him about the soaring electricity bills, threatening their businesses .

Portions of the statement presented to the Speaker read, “Electricity charges started increasing unreasonably , from December 2015 when the new tariff was introduced. An electricity charge for December 2015 is GHc 23,661.00 while that of January 2016 is GHC5,659.00. This killer charges resulted in our power disconnected until we were forced to source for loan to make part time for the ECG. This situation, we contend, may not be peculiar to our irrigation scheme alone, but is national in character.”
extension“This current level is completely not suitable to our farming business, hence our decision to release a petition to government to tell our frustration to the people of Ghana. We want the Government to make it a policy for subsidies to be introduced on electricity charges, targeted at irrigation farming,” the statement further said.
