The strike by veterinary para-professionals (all veterinary workers except veterinary doctors) in the country has started have adverse effect of meat sellers as consumption of meat products goes down.
Consumers of meat products like chicken, beef, mutton, pork etc, have reduce their daily intake for fear of contract meat related diseases such as anthrax, rabbis and bird flu.
All veterinary para-professionals in the country last Tuesday laid down their tools in protest against what they refer to as unfair treatment being meted out to them by government.
Explaining their grievances to Fox News, the National President of Veterinary Staff Association of Ghana Mr. Emmanuel Eshun said while all workers of the Health Sector classification have been given Interim Market Premium under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), veterinary y para-professionals have been left on their fate.
He added that all their efforts to get authorities to address their concerns have yielded no positive results.
Mr. Eshun said until their concerns are addressed they will not resume work.
Checks have revealed that animals slaughtered at various slaughter abattoirs across the country are not inspected thereby putting the public at risk of consuming unwholesome meat.
To avoid consuming unwholesome meat and meat products from slaughter houses manned by veterinary para professionals many Ghanaians have either stop eating meat products or reduce their intake.
