An acute water crisis has hit the whole of Yapei kusugu constituency in the northern region of Ghana.
The problem, which has become perennial, started about two months ago and there seems to be no end in sight.
The constituency has a population of about 68,000 people and about 48 villages and communities.
Some of the affected communities include, Sankpagla, Awusheyili, Yepala, Kakinkaa and Yapei Kusugu.
A resident of Yapei Kusugu, Bakari Adama told Fox News that people in the area now travel about 35 to 40 km from their various communities to the white Volta lake at Yapei to fetch water since all the rivers and streams which hitherto served as their sources of drinking water have all dried up.
He added that all attempts to get the authorities to come to their aid have yielded no positive results.
Interestingly, many of the most influential personality in Ghana’s political arena, including HON. AMADU SEIDU, five times NDC member of parliament for the constituency and the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry, HON. JOHN JINAPOR former spokesperson for president John Dramani Mahama and now the Deputy Minister of Energy and the current NDC parliamentary candidate for Yapei Kusugu constituency, and more importantly the Commander In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama the President of the Republic of Ghana is Gonja hail from the constituency.
