Young people asked to grab opportunities in agriculture for self-employment

The President of the Ghana-India Trade Advisory Chamber, Dominic Oduro-Antwi, has urged the Ghanaian youth to seek self-employment avenues rather than relying on the government for jobs.

He observed there are limited employment opportunities in the public sector, hence the need for young people to imbibe an entrepreneurial mindset to venture into business establishments.

Mr Oduro-Antwi specifically encouraged the youth to grab opportunities within the agricultural space.

He was addressing the Ghana Youth Agriculture Summit held at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, which attracted hundreds of young participants.

The Summit was on the theme: “Agriculture – A Solution to Youth Unemployment and Driver for Economic Development”.

In an interview with Oyerepa News/ GARDJA.org, Mr Oduro-Antwi said the Ghana-India Chamber is in a position to support and provide direction to young people interested in venturing into agriculture, particularly in the export of agricultural produce.

He is optimistic the Summit will help position the youth to reflect on and take up the mantle of leading in the agriculture space.

The Ghana-India Trade Advisory Chamber is providing funding opportunities for female farmers, who are ready to go into farming with a viable business plan.

The youth were urged to eschew the negative perception of agriculture and regard the sector as a full-time professional business with potential high-income earnings.

Summit participants were accordingly engaged to look beyond farming to appreciate the agricultural value chain and the opportunities therein to break away from the non-existing white-collar jobs.
